The Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, has urged citizens and political leaders to uphold harmony, mutual respect, and cultural values as Uganda heads into another election cycle.
Speaking at Bulange, Mengo, during a meeting with a delegation of National Resistance Movement (NRM) legislators from Buganda, Mayiga warned that the country has “suffered enough” from recurring political violence.
He called on all candidates to prioritize the nation’s progress and the welfare of citizens over confrontation, reminding them that political differences should never overshadow cultural identity.
“Conduct yourselves with dignity and remain grounded in the values and traditions that define the Baganda. This will help the country navigate the election period more smoothly,” he said.
Mayiga also cautioned against unrealistic campaign promises, urging aspiring leaders to focus on practical, achievable initiatives that improve livelihoods and strengthen the rule of law.
The NRM delegation, led by caucus chairperson Robert Nduggwa and his deputy, Minister Hajji Haruna Kyeyune Kasolo, thanked the Kingdom for its continued support.
Minister Kasolo highlighted community demands for assistance in coffee production and called for closer collaboration between the Kingdom and central government to boost poverty-reduction initiatives.
He also praised the cordial working relationship between the Kabaka and President Museveni, expressing confidence that this partnership would help address longstanding issues in Buganda.
Nduggwa noted a decline in the number of NRM MPs in Buganda in recent years and said the caucus is reflecting on causes and strategies to improve performance in upcoming elections.
The Katikkiro additionally appealed to MPs to tackle persistent land disputes and rising cases of land fraud in the region.
He condemned the use of firearms to intimidate residents and urged legislators to ensure that national programmes reach the Kabaka’s people while safeguarding Buganda’s interests.
The delegation included several aspiring candidates, among them former Lweza Parish Priest Munduni Philip, contesting for the Makindye-Ssabagabo Municipality seat.
The meeting, they said, strengthened their resolve ahead of campaigns. As part of the visit, the candidates contributed 10 million shillings to the Kingdom, a donation officially received by the Katikkiro.
